IN PARTICULAR  WE BELIEVE THAT THE EXTENSIVE METHODS FOR BACKGROUND RETRIEVAL DEVELOPED BY THE AEROSOL COMMUNITY WILL AID IN THE RETRIEVAL OF PROPERTIES OF LOW LEAF AREA INDEX (I.E. CROPS DURING THE GROWING SEASON) BECAUSE MODELING THE SOIL REFLECTANCE BACKGROUND IS CRITICAL FOR ACCURATE RETRIEVALS IN THESE CONDITIONS. WE WILL VALIDATE OUR RETRIEVALS FROM PUBLICALLY AVAILABLE GROUND-BASED LAI VALIDATION PRODUCTS. RETRIEVED VEGETATION PARAMETERS  SUCH AS THE LEAF AREA INDEX (LAI)  CAN BE ASSIMILATED INTO AGROECOSYSTEM MODELS TO IMPROVE THEIR PREDICTIONS AND TO ALLOW FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES THAT MAXIMIZE CROP PRODUCTION AND MANAGE ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES RESPONSIBLY. THE GROWING FIELD OF PRECISION AGRICULTURE EXTENSIVELY STUDIES HOW TO INCORPORATE REMOTELY SENSE DATA INTO FARM APPLICATIONS; THE RESEARCH PROPOSED HAS THE POTENTIAL TO SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF PRODUCTS ASSIMILATED INTO SYSTEMS FOR OPTIMAL MANAGEMENT OF FARMS. IN ADDITION  THE GENERAL IMPROVEMENT IN THE RETRIEVAL OF VEGETATION PARAMETERS THAT THIS RESEARCH SHOULD BRING FOR ALL VEGETATION TYPES WILL IMPROVE THE ABILITY TO QUANTIFY THE WATER  CARBON  AND NUTRIENT CYCLES IN THE ECOSYSTEMS BY INCREASING OUR ABILITY TO MONITOR VEGETATION ON A GLOBAL
