THIS RESEARCH PROJECT WILL EXPLORE THESE LIMITATIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES WITH CUTTING-EDGE MATHEMATICAL AND STATISTICAL METHODS.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THIS PROJECT WILL SUPPORT A TWO-YEAR POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP, JOINTLY MENTORED BY MATHEMATICIANS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AND NIST. THE FELLOW WILL FOCUS ON TOPICS IN THE FOUNDATIONS OF MACHINE LEARNING, SUCH AS UNDERSTANDING PERFORMANCE ISSUES OF GRAPH NEURAL NETWORKS, DEVELOPING SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS FOR DEEP LEARNING, AND PROVIDING ROBUST GENERATIVE METHODS IN MACHINE LEARNING.EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THE FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH SUPPORTED BY THIS GRANT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE MATHEMATICAL FOUNDATION NEEDED FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRUST AND CONFIDENCE IN MACHINE LEARNING APPLICATIONS. THE RESEARCH SUPPORTED BY THIS GRANT WILL BE PUBLISHED IN THE OPEN SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: AI SYSTEMS USED FOR DECISION MAKING NEED TO BE ABLE TO JUSTIFY THEIR DECISIONS, THAT IS, THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS NEED TO BE EXPLAINABLE. SUCH ABILITIES REMAIN RARE AMONG ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) SYSTEMS TODAY, WHICH THREATENS TO STYMIE THEIR ADOPTION IN MANY APPLICATIONS. NIST HAS DEVELOPED A NEW RESEARCH PROGRAM AIMED AT IMPROVING TRUST IN AI SYSTEMS. IMPROVING TRUST WILL BENEFIT BOTH THE DEVELOPERS AND USERS OF FUTURE AI SYSTEMS. THE RESEARCH PROPOSED BY THIS APPLICANT WILL CONTRIBUTE DIRECTLY TO THIS GOAL.
