To date, the reported complications with its use have been secondary to intravascular injection or prolonged use. Hopefully, 2 doses of cimetidine preoperatively, one orally and one i.m., will not be shown to have adverse effects on either the mother or the child as more experience with the drug is gained. Also, if the pH of liquid aspirate is elevated above 2.5, experimental animals and, therefore, presumably patients, can tolerate larger volumes of aspirate than previously thought. This concept suggests that, within reason, reducing the quantity of stomach contents to very low volumes is unnecessary, provided that the pH has been buffered.
