{"id":"https://openalex.org/G1938875445","display_name":"The roles of the ubiquitin/proteasome pathway in coxsackievirus-mediated myocarditis","description":"Myocarditis, an inflammatory disease of the heart, may lead to a dilated heart, resulting in heart failure for which the only definitive treatment is heart transplantation. In North America coxsackievirus infection is the leading causative agent of myocarditis. The proteasome is the cellular garbage collector, accumulating and destroying unwanted or damaged proteins which have been flagged. The chemical flag, ubiquitin, often determines a protein's fate; a single ubiquintin molecule helps regulate protein funtion, whereas multiple flags target the protein for destruction by the proteasome. A number of studies suggest that the ubiquitin/proteasome system plays a critical role in many cellular functions including cell proliferation regulation, cell death, inflammatory responses, and virus release from host cells. Our previous studies have shown that blocking the ubiquitin/proteasome pathway prevents coxsachkievirus is affected and whether this will reduce coxsckievirus-induced heart failure. We believe that inhibition of ubiquitin/proteasome pathway will limit viral replication, prevent abnormal protein degradation, and will, in turn, decrease the disease severity and limit progression to long-term heart failure.","funder_award_id":"64358_1","funder":{"id":"https://openalex.org/F4320334506","display_name":"Canadian Institutes of Health Research","doi":"10.13039/501100000024"},"funded_outputs":["https://openalex.org/W788272009","https://openalex.org/W1969176200","https://openalex.org/W1977164495","https://openalex.org/W1996704070","https://openalex.org/W1999541802","https://openalex.org/W2011642355","https://openalex.org/W2031253712","https://openalex.org/W2033447671","https://openalex.org/W2053332590","https://openalex.org/W2068532576","https://openalex.org/W2068617940","https://openalex.org/W2126430714","https://openalex.org/W2160610596","https://openalex.org/W2167621312","https://openalex.org/W2414689011"],"funded_outputs_count":15,"parent_awards":[],"sub_awards":[],"sub_awards_count":0,"amount":244068.0,"currency":"CAD","amount_usd":181076.7,"amount_usd_basis":"daily_rate","recipients":[],"recipient_countries":[],"recipient_regions":[],"research_scope":{"is_research":true,"basis":"funder_default","tier":1},"funding_type":"research","funder_scheme":"Operating Grant","start_date":"2003-10-01","end_date":"2006-09-30","start_year":2003,"end_year":2006,"landing_page_url":"https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/49edb1d7-5cb4-4fa7-897c-515d1aad5da3","doi":null,"provenance":"cihr_opendata","lead_investigator":{"given_name":"Honglin","family_name":"Luo","orcid":null,"role_start":"2003-10-01","affiliation":{"name":"University of British Columbia","country":"Canada","ids":null}},"co_lead_investigator":null,"investigators":null,"works_api_url":"https://api.openalex.org/works?filter=awards.id:G1938875445","primary_topic":{"id":"https://openalex.org/T11112","display_name":"Viral Infections and Immunology Research","score":0.9389,"subfield":{"id":"https://openalex.org/subfields/2705","display_name":"Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine"},"field":{"id":"https://openalex.org/fields/27","display_name":"Medicine"},"domain":{"id":"https://openalex.org/domains/4","display_name":"Health Sciences"}},"topics":[{"id":"https://openalex.org/T11112","display_name":"Viral Infections and Immunology Research","score":0.9389,"subfield":{"id":"https://openalex.org/subfields/2705","display_name":"Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine"},"field":{"id":"https://openalex.org/fields/27","display_name":"Medicine"},"domain":{"id":"https://openalex.org/domains/4","display_name":"Health Sciences"}}],"institution_awarded":[{"id":"https://openalex.org/I141945490","display_name":"University of British Columbia","ror":"https://ror.org/03rmrcq20","country_code":"CA","type":"education","lineage":["https://openalex.org/I141945490"]}],"updated_date":"2026-10-16T03:01:01.000Z","created_date":"2026-07-13T04:27:47.000Z"}
