{"id":"https://openalex.org/G1237401092","display_name":"Alabama Research Infrastructure Improvement Program","description":"The goal of the Alabama EPSCoR initiative is to create three multi-campus\r\nCenters of Excellence reflecting research programs in biological and\r\nenvironmental sciences, materials science and technology, and information\r\nscience and technology. The Centers include: (1) the Alabama Structural\r\nBiology Consortium (ASBC) which will create a critical mass of scientists in\r\nstructural biology from the University of Alabama, Huntsville (UAH), the\r\nUniversity of South Alabama (USA), and the University of Alabama, Birmingham\r\n(UAB); (2) Integrated Micro-Electromechanical Systems (IMEMS) Center will\r\ncombine the efforts at University of Alabama, Huntsville, the University of\r\nAlabama, Tuscaloosa, Auburn University and Tuskegee University to develop the\r\ninfrastructure required to integrate optical elements and nanostructures within\r\nMicro-Electromechanical (MEMS) devices. The IMEMS Center will offer\r\ncontinued growth of information technology and development of novel computer\r\nand telecommunications devices. (3) Large Scale Electromechanical Systems\r\n(LEMS), a consortium of composed of the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa,\r\nAuburn University, University of Tulsa, Shelton State Community College, and\r\nthe Alabama School of Mathematics and Science along with six industrial and\r\ntwo federal partners. The LEMs Consortium will focus on system integration in\r\nconjunction with improving performance, reliability, and efficiency while\r\ndecreasing costs and environmental hazards through use of electromechanical\r\nsystems.\r\nInfrastructure support of the Centers will include numerous education and\r\noutreach activities that will broaden the reach and impact of the proposed project.\r\nIn addition, An Internet2 initiative will further develop the state's information\r\ntechnology infrastructure. The initiative will provide the interconnective high\r\nspeed networking infrastructure necessary for communication and collaboration\r\nof all the universities operating as cohesive Centers.\r\n","funder_award_id":"0091853","funder":{"id":"https://openalex.org/F4320306076","display_name":"National Science Foundation","doi":"10.13039/100000001"},"funded_outputs":["https://openalex.org/W844602504","https://openalex.org/W1907675431","https://openalex.org/W1973055274","https://openalex.org/W2107772901","https://openalex.org/W7043572336"],"funded_outputs_count":5,"parent_awards":[],"sub_awards":[],"sub_awards_count":0,"amount":9000000.0,"currency":"USD","amount_usd":9000000.0,"amount_usd_basis":"usd_native","recipients":[],"recipient_countries":[],"recipient_regions":[],"research_scope":{"is_research":true,"basis":"programme_rule","tier":4},"funding_type":"grant","funder_scheme":"Continuing Grant","start_date":"2001-02-01","end_date":"2005-10-31","start_year":2001,"end_year":2005,"landing_page_url":"https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=0091853","doi":null,"provenance":"nsf_award_search","lead_investigator":{"given_name":"H.","family_name":"McDowell","orcid":null,"role_start":null,"affiliation":{"name":"University of Alabama Tuscaloosa","country":"","ids":null}},"co_lead_investigator":null,"investigators":null,"works_api_url":"https://api.openalex.org/works?filter=awards.id:G1237401092","primary_topic":null,"topics":null,"institution_awarded":[{"id":"https://openalex.org/I17301866","display_name":"University of Alabama","ror":"https://ror.org/03xrrjk67","country_code":"US","type":"education","lineage":["https://openalex.org/I17301866"]}],"updated_date":"2026-10-16T03:01:01.000Z","created_date":"2026-07-13T04:41:43.000Z"}
